NICHOLAS K:  Native American Tradition with a Downtown Edge

By Mariela Zapata

The Nicholas K SS 2014 collection at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week displayed an innovative quality while playfully enticing the audience with a Native American cosmopolitan edge. The dynamic SS 2014 collection gives the modern woman and man a sophisticated nomadic look while allowing one to maintain a level of casual comfort.

The Native American theme gives the collection a cohesiveness. A palette of sheer whites, antler and bone colored cotton trimmed with deerskin are symbols of peace, happiness and purity. Contrasting darkness in black, midnight and onyx is reminiscent of smudging smoke. Turquoise, the, "fallen sky stone," is the accent color  that was used throughout the collection.

The Nicholas K Spring/Summer 2014 collection is a window into an ancient world. It gives us the opportunity to explore our fashion imagination while keeping our feet firmly rooted to a spiritual ground. It is this duality that separates this collection from their contemporaries and gives us, the media and the public, wanting more.
